Windows 10 comes with a new web browser to replace Internet Explorer. Microsoft Edge is the default web browser for Windows 10 now. As with the previous versions of the Windows OS, Microsoft is forcing us to use their own web browser, in this case is Microsoft Edge. For some people, Microsoft Edge is a useless web browser, even Internet Explorer is way better than Edge. This browser keep opened by itself every time we click a link, which is annoying.
Maybe some of you are wondering is there any ways to get rid, disable, turn off, or uninstall Microsoft Edge completely from Windows 10. Well, we get a couple of ways to tackle this issue.
How to disable and turn off microsoft edge on windows 10
Change the default web browser
The idea is, if we change the default browser with another web browser like Google Chrome, then Microsoft Edge will not show up again. Close the Microsoft Edge if you are currently running it. Go to Start menu and type “default programs” – without quotes. Select Default Programs from the top of the search results. Select Set your default programs.
We assume that you are already install your favorite web browser like firefox or chrome, all the applications you installed will show up here, including the web browsers. Find the web browser in the list in the left-hand column, we are using google chrome, so select and click it and then click Set this program as default.
Click Choose defaults for this program to set the file types you want to open with the new default web browser. Check all the extensions to make sure Microsoft Edge don’t show up again.
Disable Microsoft Edge and prevent Windows to run it
Sometimes changing Microsoft Edge to another browser as the default web browser for Windows 10 is not always work. Well, Microsoft Edge is a core components of Windows 10, which means you can’t just get rid of it just like Internet Explore. Even tough we can’t uninstall it, but we can still disable or turn it off.
First, you need to log in as Administrator, because we are gonna mess up with programs and files, so we need an administrator authority. Open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SystemApps and look for a folder named Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe or something like that, because the name could be different everytime you run the Windows Update.
Right-click the folder and select properties. Go to the Security tab and click Advanced button For Special Permissions or Advanced Settings. We need to change the owner to control this folder. Follow the link to change owner so it’s no longer TrustedInstaller. A window will appears, Type Administrator in the the big text field, then click the button next to it to Check Names. Windows automatically detects and suggests the administrator account.
Click OK to confirm changes. You will be taken back to the Advanced Security Settings panel.
Now we can do anything to that Microsoft Edge’s folder, we will change the permission. But first, in the first set of info, the one with the Change link, there should now be an option to Replace Owner on Subcontainers and Objects. Make sure it is checked, and press OK.
Right-click on the folder again and select Properties, click Edit, then Change Permission. Select the Administrators account from the Group or User Names list, and check the Allow box for Full Control. Click Apply and OK to confirm changes, and OK to close the properties panel so that you become the owner. We will not delete this folder because it’s gonna lead to a serious system stability issues. Create a backup for the folder in case something bad happens, so we can retrieve it.
Change the permission of the folder to Read-only, so Windows can’t access and make any changes inside it. By doing this, Microsoft Edge is unusable. Go to the folder’s properties, at the bottom of the General tab, select the Read-only checkbox until it’s marked with a check symbol ✓ and not a square ◼. Press Apply and OK to confirm.
So that’s it, Microsoft Edge will not launched again by itself, if you wish to make it back to life, change the permission again to read and write, or of you want to completely erase Edge, go to that folder and rename the MicrosoftEdge.exe and MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe files, or completely delete them.
